The Bees
by Laline Paull
You are in the mind of one of the worker bees and you really start to get the feel of how it is being a bee and fitting in and doing your duty, reading this book. It was really amazing, the amount of detail that went into describing this one bee; much less this entire hive of activity. The bee we follow and become part of her world, she isn't born any normal worker bee. She is considered rather ugly because her color is not like that of normal bees, but that is only the beginning for her. She is more than her looks. She can do more than they can.
Her life is a journey in which she works the hardest she can for her hive.
I had no idea when I picked this up that I would become so absorbed in it, but it was that excellent. It tells you how bees communicate and show others where to go to get pollen. And how the queen is, how she keeps harmony in the hive and even how she is replaced.
I have a huge respect for bees that has only grown because of this book and because of how this author so immaculately chose to portray it. It is not something I would have normally picked up, but I'm glad I did.
Someday I believe I will read it again and see if my husband would like to read it. He also is fascinated by bees.
