Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

4.5

SO CHILLING!!

I thought because this was marketed as a YA novel that it wouldn't be so dark... but wow. Very interesting themes regarding death and disease.

I really enjoyed The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, but didn't enjoy his YA novel The Prince of Mist and so I went into Marina with pretty low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself speeding through this book! Especially towards the end it became very gripping. Ruiz Zafon has a way of making characters' back stories mesmerising. Long monologues usually bore me, but those written by him seem to be the exception.

I always enjoy reading characters that are neither 'good' nor 'evil' but have aspects of both light and darkness within them. I also found the ending very fitting.

I highly recommend Marina to those who want a fast-paced mysterious macabre read.
