The New Naturals by Gabriel Bump
4.0
The New Naturals is a novel comprised of multiple POV's from individuals who are searching for more from life. Rio and Gibraltar, after suffering a crushing emotional blow decide that current society is not capable of delivering a life they want to live. They begin to feel an intense urge to start their own society underground away from the madness of current society. As other individuals learn about their safe haven, more POV's are added, exploring various reasons why they want to get away from their current lives and start fresh. Through them we experience homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction, and profound loss, all reasons why sometimes people give up on life. But, instead of giving up they begin their journeys to the abandoned restaurant, and the secret society hiding underneath it.
The main focus of this novel is the individuals experiences, rather than the building and maintaining of a secret society. There is some discussion on this topic including finding a benefactor, and what that entails, as well as how to feed a population surviving underground, but it is far from the focus of the novel.
The New Naturals is not what I expected, but I really enjoyed it all the same. There is heartache, struggle, and trauma, but throughout there is a vein of hope, perseverance, and drive to keep going despite the odds against them.
