Layers upon layers!

The sheer richness of the writing alone makes this book worth grabbing up, but the three-dimensional characters whose lives, struggles, and layers upon layers of characterizations involved in each one of them is what made me fall in love with it. A lot of books feature good characters, but this book? This features real characters who are vibrant, vital, and heartrendingly human.

Everyone above a certain age can appreciate how time changes us as people. It's easy to relate to Maya as a person who is more existing in her life than living it after her relationship with Cam blows up. She's allowed herself to settle in so many ways; she's become a person she thought she wanted to be yet she's lost so much of herself she doesn't know how she feels or if she does at all. There are times when she's clearly reacting from an emotional mindset rather than a logical mind; there are moments where Maya is hard to take because she's broken from life as it has played out for her up to this stage.

She's human though and her reality makes her priceless to me.

Lucky for the readers, it makes her more precious than rubies to Cam, too.

Oh, Cameron~

I feel as if he deserves a swoon there since he's a real man. He's the kind of male protagonist who I love to read about: sensitive without being sappy, sincere, honest, forthright, and sensational out of bed as well as in it. His unwavering devotion to Maya made my heart physically ache in my chest with every beat. It's that moving.

There are some steamy scenes in this book which should make the reader's screen fog up! I will admit that surprised me. I was prepared for the emotional ride, but the hot sex? That was a bonus. It was like someone giving me chocolate-covered popcorn at the movies: BONUS WIN.

Throughout the entire book, I kept waiting to see if I could predict how things would play out -sometimes? sure, others? not so much- and I kept hoping for a happy ending. I'm glad to have gotten the chance to read this work. It's an amazing contribution to the literary world which will be in my top 10 for 2014.
