"The Fire Is Upon Us" might be one of the most enlightening books to explain the political discourse in the United States, without spending any time talking about current politics. It's a careful study of the historical context around the Cambridge Debate between James Baldwin, one of the greatest writers in US history and certainly one of our most profound thinkers on race, and William F Buckley, Jr., the founder of National Review and the forefather of the modern conservative movement.
As the Buccola lays out the lives and thinking processes both men went through leading up to the debate, we see the development of much of the rhetoric that makes up our current discourse on the topic of race and justice in modern US politics. The way current arguments for states rights and limited government are rooted in an attempt to mount a more "moderate" defense of the segregation system, and the ongoing struggle to include the personal points of view of Black Americans in both our telling of history and our evaluation of the current system.
For anyone wanting to understand more about how we got to where we are, this is a book you simply must read
