The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

2.0

Started this while on vacation. Just could not get very interested. The libby time expired before I finished. Thought about not finishing but went ahead and got on the list to re-borrow. MEH. The Alice Network was a group of women spies during WWI. Evelyn was recruited because she was fluent in French, German and English. She was sent to the French countryside to work as a waitress in a German occupied town. The man that owned the restaurant was a french citizen that collaborated with the Germans. Rene. He was evil. He took Evelyn (marguerite) as a lover. When Eve was caught with her direct superior in the spy network Lili, Rene tortured Eve by breaking her fingers and knuckles with a marble but of Bauldaire. The other part of the story was about Charlotte St. Clair (charlie). She was in search of her cousin Rose who disappeared during WWII. The time for the stories alternated between 1916-1919 and 1946-49. I did not care for the Charlie part of the story at all for some reason. As a character, I did not find her interesting or even really developed. Of course she falls in love with Finn who is Evelyn’s driver as they go through France to search for Rose and Evelyn to find and kill Rene.
