The Strings of Murder by Oscar de Muriel
5.0
This was SO good. I can't believe it took me this long to get around to reading it, especially since a friend had been raving about it.
This had everything I look for in a murder mystery/historic crime book, a chilling atmosphere, mentions of the occult, and gruesome grisly details. The two main characters were fantastic, watching them go from bickering like school children to forming a rather close bond was amazing.
This beautifully told mystery really brings the bleak, drizzly Edinburgh setting to life. I loved what a dark, macabre tale this turned out to be. Notes of the supernatural, devil worship, occult imagery and a good bit of desecrating a body in its grave are contained in this book.
Finding out who the murderous beast really was, the exhilarating final chase, and finding out his real motives and his next victim... God, it was brilliant. This is a solid debut, and now I must read more of these two characters.
