Dance of Thieves by Mary E. Pearson

4.0

For my first dive into the fantasy genre, I was pleasantly surprised. I'd seen a few of Haley Pham's videos on YouTube and she loved this duology so I thought I'd try it out since we have similar book tastes. I bought it and then it sat on my shelf unread for a few months. I was so scared to try a fantasy book because I didn't want to waste a lot of effort. Committing to a fantasy book is a lot more work than a simple rom-com or non-fiction book.

But I was very pleasantly surprised about how much I enjoyed this book. The world-building was superb and Pearson did a phenomenal job of letting the dialogue explain as well as the descriptive paragraphs build up the "Dance of Thieves" world.

I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between Kazi & Jase as well, especially since it was closed-door. I also really loved all the supporting characters, especially Jase's family. I hope we get to hear more about Kazi's childhood, we learn a lot about it from her perspective, but I would love to know what actually happened to her mom for real. (I've heard we get a bit more of this in the sequel which I hope is true!)

Overall, I really really enjoyed this and am excited to read the sequel. 4/5
