The Paper Magician
by Charlie N. Holmberg
First thing I will say is that I liked this book. It won't seem like it somewhat in this review, but I DID. And I will continue the series to find out what happens next in [b:The Glass Magician|22341276|The Glass Magician (The Paper Magician Trilogy, #2)|Charlie N. Holmberg|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1410466975s/22341276.jpg|41739586]. The story begins with Ceony not getting to live her dreams as a material magician working with metal, but instead being forced to be a Folder and her medium paper. No one wants to be a Folder because paper is the weakest material, but at the top of her class, and with so few Folders left, the choice is made for her.
Then she meets her mentor, Emery Thane and he is nothing like she expected.
Perhaps the man wasn't so mad after all. Or maybe it's just a madness that I can learn to appreciate.
She goes on an adventure through his literal heart in order to save him, when mysterious Lyra rips it out of his chest with magic. Lyra is also a magician, but her medium is the human body... insert ominous music here.
My problem with this book lies in the fact that it could have been even better if the romantic aspect was left out. Ceony spends several chapters where she realizes she can be friends with her mentor and learn to like being a Folder because he makes it fun, and then suddenly is falling in love with him. I just think the turn was too sudden and the feelings forced. He disappears for days they have 2 conversations when he gets back, sh** hits the fan and suddenly she has all these feelings. I could have done without it or with it flowing more nicely is all.
Other than that, good read and I finished it quickly.
