The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
5.0

This is a retelling of the Grimm brothers' "Goose Girl". Shy, first-born, crown princess of Kildenree, Anidori grows up with her aunt. Ani learns to speak with animals, although she is uncomfortable around many humans. Her aunt goes away, and thus ends Ani's happy childhood. Her father, Ani's other protector, dies soon after. Also, her mother proclaims her younger brother, Calib-Loncris as her heir during the funeral. Afterwards, Ani learns that her mother has arranged a marriage for her to the prince of Bayern. This angers her because as first-born child and crown princess, she is the one who is expected to rule. She knew of the marriage but believed that it would be between her younger sister, Susenna-Napralina and the Bayern heir. She resigns herself, however, because her mother is the queen. Her lady-in-waiting, Selia, is very happy to journeying to Bayern, while Ani is not.

This is the first Shannon Hale book I read and it is beautiful. Hale's prose is so lovely, so poetical. Her characters are very clearly divided into good and evil, but they aren't necessarily immediately obvious that way.

I highly recommend this book but fair warning, it is a bit slow to start (although it is completely worth the wait!)
