I really enjoyed this story. I actually didn't realize it was a standalone until over halfway through which was a nice surprise.

The character dynamics were really nice. I felt there was a nice balance of Yeva and her family and Yeva and the Beast. However, the relationship between Yeva and the Beast never felt flushed out and it was just a lot of pining but no actual substance to develop the relationship.

I did not like how the ending went. It was very rushed and there were a bunch of different aspects of the world that were introduced but all within the last 70 pages and once again, never felt touched on enough. Within that ending it also felt like it was trying to be a dark fantasy but never quite got there and if Spooner had just taken more time and upped the page count for that ending it would have been a lot better.

To end on a positive note, I loved the Beast's letters in between chapters. They were so atmospheric as they just became more and more blood spattered and incoherent and it really added to the whole reading experience.
