Premeditated Peppermint by Amanda Flower
4.0
**book provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was laughing by the end of the first paragraph in [b:Premeditated Peppermint|37794311|Premeditated Peppermint (Amish Candy Shop Mystery #3)|Amanda Flower|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1514871409s/37794311.jpg|59457678] book 3 in the Amish Candy Shop Mystery series by [a:Amanda Flower|3412728|Amanda Flower|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1476971006p2/3412728.jpg]. The book starts with the lead character, Bailey King, ruminating on the many uses of peppermint: "It has a thousand uses. It has been used to freshen breath, flavor beverages, calm nerves, and even grow hair. But as far as I could tell, it did not have the power to repel ex-boyfriends."
Bailey's ex-boyfriend/celebrity chef Eric Sharp has arrived, unannounced, from New York City and now stands in Swissmen's Sweets, the candy shop run by Baily; Clara King, Bailey's Amish grandmother, and Charlotte, a young cousin to Clara. The shop is awash with peppermint preparations for Harvest's Christmas Market when her "ex-boyfriend crashed my candy shop. That was the moment when I realized peppermint's shortcomings."
Eric is in Harvest with a film crew from New York City and the plan is to film a Christmas special for his show--including getting back together with Bailey. But, there are complications. First, Bailey can't grant permission to film in the candy shop. Swissmen's Sweets belongs to Clara and she will need to get the permission of her church before any filming can take place. Second, Bailey has no intention or interest in Eric. She is far more interested in Deputy Aiden Brody, but work schedules of the two have interfered with starting any type of relationship. Aiden isn't happy with the New York City invasion of Harvest, but there isn't much he can do, seeing as how Margot Rawlings, a member of the village board of directors was always looking for ways to raise Harvest's profile and increase the flow of tourism dollars. She has granted the film crew permission to film in Harvest and they intend to do so.
Before filming can begin, outside of the shop since it is off-limits until the Amish deacon and bishop of Clara's church make a decision, a body is discovered in a gazebo on the village square. Eric is a prime suspect, and Bailey is the only person with any interest in proving his innocence. As much as she doesn't want him in her life, she knows he isn't capable of murder and now must uncover the killer's identity to keep Eric out of jail. But, the killer is determined not to be found and will do what he or she must to get away with murder.
As per usual with Flower's mysteries, she keeps the reader on their toes. She's an expert at sprinkling in red herrings throughout the story, and it's hard to figure out the real culprit before story's end. Humor is also sprinkled throughout, making her stories fun to read.
So if you're looking for a cozy mystery with humor, red herrings that keep you guessing, and a cast of well-rounded characters, including a pet pig named Jethro, I recommend Premeditated Peppermint and the other books in the series.
