My Heart Is a Chainsaw
by Stephen Graham Jones
This book was quite a bit different from what I was expecting. We open with a truly suspenseful and scary scene, following a foreign couple as they are taken by some mysterious being in the lake. I was expecting the rest of the book to have a similar tone, but instead, we switch to an FMC who is more than happy to welcome the presence of a slasher in her hometown. Something about her eagerness to be at the center of a real-life version of one of her favorite movies killed any suspense that there could have been. Though this book is definitely not lacking in the gore department. I also found her inner monologue slightly manic and therefore hard to follow at times, which is arguably intentional, but it made it hard for me to enjoy the book.
In general, I found the story entertaining, and I would be interested to read another book by this author, if only to see if I enjoy his writing more with a different main character.
