The High Mountain Court by A.K. Mulford

5.0

THE HIGH MOUNTAIN COURT is the first of five books in The Crowns of Okrith series. Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Falling Kingdoms and all things romantasy.

Remy & Prince Hale are sparking with attraction and tension from the moment they meet. I have come to trust Mulford in their approach to the Fated Mates trope. Even if the connection is so immediately obvious, characters are allowed the time to resist, question, doubt or hide from the bond. Characters have the agency to choose their partner and accept them when they are fully committed.

Their travels take them through all five kingdoms, each with their own climate, culture, and complications. I appreciated learning the history of the world in real-time alongside Remy while escaping witch hunters or feeling a heist. Pacing was also well timed to savor certain emotional moments and then ramp up for action and adventure.

One housekeeping note. This is my second A.K. Mulford book and there are very obvious similarities between the two. They share plenty of the same tropes - hidden royal, jerk King father, reclaim a throne, soulmates, edging the reader (appreciation), friend-family, and more. Yet, just like Star Wars A New Hope & The Force Awakens, the plot points might be similar but its the cast of unique characters that makes each story stand on its own.

I am also so very glad to have the second book already borrowed from the library because I am fully invested. I can't wait to know what comes next.
