As an expanded work from Tolkien's Legendarium, this tale is dark and tragic.  The evil forces of the world succeed in destroying the family and causing immense grief and loss.  Easily the darkest aspect of Tolkien's work, the heroes are followed closely by villainy, leaving only death in their wake for all the light they try to bring.  And it is all told in beautiful Tolkien prose.
