He Who Fights with Monsters: Book Twelve by Shirtaloon, Shirtaloon, Travis Deverell
4.0
I think it's been about a year since I binged the first 11 books in this series, so it was a much different experience reading it. The author still did a decent job reminding me of all the characters so I could remember all the in jokes.
I think the important thing to remember about these books is that they are self-indulgent power-leveling-porn. The whole point is that the dude get awesomely strong, people never realize it, and we get to watch awesome fights and see the comeupances. It's silly, and it's not always mature, but it's fun.
If I remember correctly, the earlier books, (especially the audio books) were plagued by literal tables in the middle of the text, which totally ruined the flow of the fights. The books have gotten much better in that regard -- the fights are exciting and enveloping.
Jason has come back to earth and magic earth this time as a legit immortal prime avatar astral nexus god-king, and the gratifying power level showing off throughout the book is perfect. Shirtaloon has gotten much better at this, mixing in low characters who can only really glimpse the threat Jason poses, with actual interstellar travelers who are completely gobsmacked by him.
Obviously the book has a ton of tropes and sayings that would be cringe if you said them to yourself in the shower, much less if you read them in a book...but the thing is, this book is unabashed power-leveling-porn, and it works. "Is that a threat, Mr. Asano?" "You don't threaten a mosquito that lands on your arm. You swat it..if it bothers you."
I mean, holy cheese balls. But then again, when you are in the roil of the story, it's awesome.
Anyway, these books are exciting, they are fun, they are trash, they are only average writing...but I just can't put them down.
