On one level, The Voyage Out is a coming of age story of Rachel Vinrace set at the beginning of the twentieth century. She travels from England to some vague town in South America, that operates as a Shakespearean Arcadia. Things happen there that normally do not happen in solid dependable England. People explore the land and their place in it. They ask questions about the meaning of life. They continually question the purpose of men and women.

Woolf crafts wonderful characters that are very human in their flaws and hopes. These are people who think that they understand life, but then have doubts. Arguments are had. Discussions are made. Plans are put together. All of this is told by Woolf in a wonderful fashion. Her command of the English language is humbling. This is why I can read her books over and over again. I learn something new each time.
