If you’re going into this book after watching the Ghibli movie, let me say something. This is not Ghibli. It’s BETTER.

How to...how to describe the perfection that is “Howl’s Moving Castle?” Its an easy read. It’s got magic. Its got a world that feels mystical and huge and whimsical. It’s got a strong female main character that don’t take sass from NOBODY. It’s got a whiny wizard man that wears fancy clothes and carries around a guitar he doesn’t even know how to play.

Let me tell you, there were MANY things I enjoyed about this book, but none more so than Howl himself. He’s ridiculous-a powerful wizard that trips falling up the stairs when he’s drunk. He’s a drama queen, DEMANDING attention from the people around him. In other words, he’s perfect.

On a more serious note though, the entire book felt lighthearted. Yes, serious things are happening in the lands around the moving castle, but I was always more curious than anything else. I wanted to know more about the characters, the magical world beyond the nothingness, the horrible secret of the Witch of the Wastes. If you need a lighthearted and fantastical quick read, look no further.

Verdict: 5/5 dubious piles of temper tantrum goo
