Cold Queen by K Webster

4.0

Cold Queen is the second book in the Sinister Fairy Tale Collection. Although a part of the collection of stories and I haven’t read the first book, this can be read as a standalone. As the name of the collection says, this is a dark, twisted re-telling of Frozen and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. It is no secret that I love everything this author writes since I started reading her other works and I wasn’t disappointed in this newest book.

I admit, at first I thought this will be a retelling of Snow White, you know with the references of snow in this book or Cinderella since there is the a matter of stepmother and sister, Yanna but as a I read on, I was like, nope, this is Frozen. So, the story follows when Elzira and Yanna was orphaned at a young age when their parents died on the way to their travels. As the oldest, she was crowned Queen immediately and given the vast responsibilities of being one for Norta Icelands and taking care of her sister. Through all the early years of her reign, she was a force to be reckoned with as she was able to use her gift as the weather maker but a few years later, her strength and power was waning.

When King Ryke Bloodsun of Souta Volcanoes came to her land to strike a deal by marrying Princess Yanna and therefore merging their powerful kingdom so he could go on a mission to Hidden Lands, Queen Elzira refuses. She felt that she will die soon and she wanted someone who will love her sister as she did, and she knew that King Ryke will just use her sister. King Ryke couldn’t help but be intrigued by the fierce spirit of the almost-dying Cold Queen and continued to seek her attention. During this course, he began to be suspicious of the people around the queen and vowed to find the truth and as a result, helped her gain her powers and strength.

The story has the element of enemies-to-lovers, action packed with zombie-like nemesis, betrayals (this one really hurts! Ugh!) and a lot of steamy scenes and romance (whew!). The buildup of suspense was just right and I was sure of the culprit’s identity only to be proved wrong. Ugh! I wasn’t expecting that reveal. King Ryke is one intense alpha male but has a tender spot for his queen, and that my friend made him such as hot book boyfriend! This was an intense, suspenseful, steamy read and definitely recommends it to every romance lover out there. Can’t wait for another book from this collection!
