Hey, Kiddo: How I Lost My Mother, Found My Father, and Dealt with Family Addiction by Jarrett J. Krosoczka

challenging dark emotional reflective sad tense medium-paced

5.0

As with most addiction narratives, this one is rough. Hey Kiddo tells the story of Jarrett's life growing up with (but mostly without) his mother who is addicted to heroin. The art style is muted watercolors and, I think, achieves the author's goal of making it look like a memory. It's a tough read, but compelling in the way that the story is told all the way through from a child's perspective - when Jarrett's a toddler, little is revealed about the details of what's wrong, and the reader learns the family secrets with Jarrett as he grows up. I imagine this is an important and meaningful book for kids with similar stories.
