Mulan: Before the Sword
by Grace Lin
3.5 stars
I liked how this story was told in the style of interlocking folk tales. The audiobook narrator did a great job, and Lin's descriptions were beautifully done. I know this was sponsored by Disney, but it didn't necessarily feel like a Disney tale. I was a little surprised that they gave Mulan a sister who was not featured in the original animated Disney version, but apparently she was in the live action remake and I just have zero recollection of her character (and much of the remake for that matter). Even removing Disney from it entirely, it was still an enjoyable story and felt like it could fit in with other Mulan tales and Chinese folklore.
