Game Plan is the first book of the new spin-off series Vancouver Orcas. I love sports books and especially hockey and it shows in Ms Aislin's writing that she knows a hell of a lot about the sport.
I loved her Stick Side series and when given the opportunity to get an ARC, I jumped for joy!!
Matt Shore is the AHL coach of the Orcas, he's responsible to get the team away from the last position to way up in the rank. He's taking his job very serious, is a tough but approachable couch and is loved by his players. The only thing missing is a partner, someone to share his life with. He thought he had this in Pierce, but unfortunately he left Matt after an 18 month relationship with no explanation.
Pierce Langley-Brown is the father of Jason, who's a member of Matt's team. He was totally happy with Matt, but he got estranged from his son because his ex-wife made him the bad guy. When his son is involved in a car accident, he leaves Matt from one day to another and get's in a deep depression which takes him a long time to handle. He always meant to contact Matt but because it's been so hard dealing with his depression and reconciling with Jason, he just left it unhandled.
Switch forward two years and Jason has been traded to the Vancouver Orcas where Matt's his coach. When Jason faints on the field and his father is contacted, Matt and Pierce meet again. At first Matt is angry, devastated that he didn't even know Pierce was back, but he soon realises his feelings haven't changed at all and they tentatively decide to be friends again. Of course things don't stay that way and soon they don't want to be separate anymore.
This is a great second chance story. I loved the way Pierce's depression was portrayed. It was handled with care, not taken lightly. The fear of losing his son again is one of his main problems and it's great to see how supportive Matt is in all this. Even though he's scared too and only wants to start off as friends first, they soon realise that their love is still very strong and together they work through all the struggles towards their happy ending.
I'm already looking forward to the next book in this wonderful series. I wonder who'll be the next one of the cousins to get their story.
*I kindly received a copy of this book by the author via Bookfunnel and this is my honest review.*
