Katherine Arden is a gift. This was a difficult read — the topic wholly depressing. That being said, the depth and breadth of each and every single character is astounding. There were moment while listening while i was holding my breath. Not only the depiction of soldiers, the mud, the shelling, the gas, but also the nurses — hands burned by mustard gas, brains coming away with bandages. But with that horror comes the complex nature of what it means to be human. Loss and love and loyalty. Moments of pure tenderness. And then add a true devil, a devil with a violin. I was grateful for the ending, and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but I finished this book with a smile and a sigh.
I am going to purchase this book. Katherine Arden writes books that once you read them you absolutely have to own them. Every book I have read by her has left me a little bit different afterwards.
