Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
4.0

I genuinely liked this book, which was a big change from the first part of the book where I was thinking it might be my lowest rated Austen book. But no, Jane Austen pulled it back with some great characterisations, great use of dialogue, and some genuinely hilarious and moving lines.

I loved Elinor, and wanted the best outcome for her, but as much as Marianne annoyed me at the start of the book, I kept telling myself that she is young and silly and has a lot of passion and shows more emotion than her sister does, and there's nothing wrong with that. Marianne also shows a lot of character growth towards the end and seems less silly and more understanding of other's feelings and the benefit of behaving politely to people even if you don't like them all that much.

The basis of this book is the relationship between the two sisters, and their romances. Elinor is in love with Edward Ferrars, who is the brother of her sister in law. Marianne, after the family moves early on in the book, is introduced to Willoughby and falls immediately in love with him. Marianne has little patience for people who don't show the same 'sensibility' for things that she does, and in that I take it to mean that she wants a man who is as passionate about the things she likes as she is, and not shy to show it. Elinor is the sister with sense, who doesn't show her emotions and feelings towards Edward publicly, and who is ready to provide advice and caution to her family members.

Overall, I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting, and am very glad to have read it. Next month I will be reading my final Jane Austen book, and I'm a bit sad that I will no longer have the experience of reading these for the first time. Jane Austen's writing is just so good, and I know I will re-read all the books of hers that I've read so far.
