The Flip Side by James Bailey
funny
hopeful
lighthearted
medium-paced
3.0
the flip side was a humourous read is how i can describe it the best. it was full of sarcasm and jokes that often bordered on being ridiculous but still didn't fail to make you laugh anyway.
the first chapter starts off with a pretty comical rejection which only turns more chaotic as the pages go by (the non-engagement party remained as one of my favourite moments throughout the book) and that got me excited about everything else that the book had to offer.
the concept behind the story itself is really interesting (would you dare to make all your decisions in life on the flip of a coin?) and the writing was light and fairly entertaining for most parts. josh is the kind of character that almost all of us could've related to at one point or another, specially his inability to sound sensible when it was most needed lol.
but at some point the 'jokes' got too overpowering and repetitive for my taste and therefore, unfortunately, a bit cringey too. the very slow build-up of romance and the excessive focus on the mc's detailed every day life instead didn't help and sadly, that is where i started to lose interest and it became a bit of a drag for me.
i would probably recommend this one as more "com" than a rom-com and i think keeping the expectation difference between the two in mind might help in enjoying it better.
having said that, i do have to mention that i absolutely adored whatever little romance we did get in the book even though it could seem slightly unrealistic because of how quickly it happened. the dates shared in the art galleries and the cemetery and all the conversations about van gogh and the sunflowers, i was all in for it and it was really cute. which only makes me wish we had explored that more but well.
all the other relationship dynamics with the family and friends were equally silly and sweet. and admittedly, the grandparents-grandchildren trope/aspect in a story has never failed to touch my emotions so i liked that nice little arc (the author has also dedicated the book to his nan and pap).
overall, it was an amusing read and if you are in the mood for something light and funny, this can be your next pick.
