This was a collection of short stories outside the main Earthsea storyline. One tells the story of the founding of the school on Roke. Another tells of a woman who seeks to study magic from the wizards at Roke. The most interesting part was Le Guinn's history of Earthsea at the end, where she gives what is a sort of anthropological study of Earthsea and its cultures. Maybe it was just the edition I had but the forward and afterword were virtually the same.
If I ever reread the series, I'm likely to skip this one.
