The Song of the Quarkbeast
by Jasper Fforde
The sequel to the "The Last Dragonslayer" is just as good as the first. Filled to the brim with deadpan humor and whimsy. Jennifer Strange must navigate a world filled with Quarkbeasts and trolls, the King's Useless Brother (his actual name), magic that operates everything from bicycles to microwave ovens, wizards that give themselves accolades as they deem fit ("Great", "The Once Magnificent", "The All Powerful", etc.), and much more all while trying to operate and run the Great Zambini's magic for hire business as a trod upon foundling (orphan). I love Jasper Fforde's style of humor that, while good in his Next Thursday adult series of novels, seems to work even better in YA/Juvy. As I read to my kids, I needed to explain some of the humor and vocabulary, but that's a good thing in my eyes. Not at all a terrible thing to expand and challenge one's vocabulary and understanding of humor. It definitely did not detract from their enjoyment either. Both laughed quite a bit and begged me to read more throughout. I also love the main character, Jennifer. She's a great example of a powerful female character that I sorely needed after some of the more recent books I've read...coughhungergamescoughcough...
