I don't know if its due to me already checking out other works that were inspired by this book or if this just isn't my cup of tea but I just found this kinda boring and not really funny.
For a book called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy there's surprisingly not much in the way of hitchhiking to be found here. I think the biggest reason why it didn't gel with me is that its a lot more plot than character based, so that even though we have by the end a crew of four I could hardly tell you any traits about them. I find comedy works well when its character focused and really adds to the narrative; while here there are little tangents that don't have much of a link with the main plot that I forget about after a few pages (although the tangent about dolphins was fun).
This wasn't torturous to read, in fact it was quite readable, I just felt indifferent to it by the end.
I still respect this book for all the great works it inspired others to make and I have the other books in the series, so I will get round eventually to reading the whole thing, but for now I think I'm going to find something else to read that's more my style.
