The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp
4.0

Well, that certainly was a spectacular read! See what I did there?
I really loved this book. It was completely different from what I expected it to be, and very unique. There are a lot of books that had potential to be like this one, but this is the only one that really pulled it off.
The plot of the book was simple. It was just a senior, living out his life the way he wanted to. The whole thing was completely realistic, compared to the real world. I truly believe this could happen to anyone. I loved how everything had such great wording. Like, this book was written so, so well. There were tons of amazing quotes, and just hilarious moments that I'm glad the author captured. Though, the book did have some slow moments, it still kept you reading, because it was so interesting and weird....yes, it was totally weird. The weirdest book I've ever read...but in a good way.
I have to admit I wanted a different ending, but this ending was still pretty good...and not at all what you expect.
Sutter, the protagonist in the story, gave me mixed-feelings. He was hilarious, and he really was caring. He wanted the best for everyone. He had his share of problems, just like any other teenager, but I felt as though he didn't handle them right. I wanted him to grow-up, from what he was, but really, he didn't develop that great throughout the story. Cassidy, Sutter's ex-girlfriend, was annoying. I truly didn't like her through most of the book. I just felt she was one of those girls that thought everything was just dandy. But, in the end, I did understand where she was coming from and began to like her. Aimee, Sutter's new girlfriend in the book, was so easy to connect with and love in the beginning. She was nerdy and adorable, but a bit of a pushover...sort of like myself. She grew throughout the book, but I actually didn't like how she developed. I thought she could have had so much potential...but she didn't.
There were tons of secondary characters throughout the book; Sutter's ex-girlfriends, his best friend, his sister, his mother, and then Aimee's parents. I thought they really made the book complete, because you got to know each and every one of them, and even if you didn't end up liking them, at least you got to understand them.
So, overall I really liked this book. I've never read anything like it, and I don't think I will anytime soon.
I wouldn't suggest this book to everyone, because it was a bit mature, and the scenes in the book were a bit on the risky side. Just some of what happens wouldn't be suitable for some people to read.
But I do think if you like John Green, you'd enjoy this book.
