Give Me a Sign by Anna Sortino

5.0

I really loved this book! Especially the gaps in Lilah’s understanding both in ASL and English. I found myself (hearing interpreter) feeling a familiar headache of trying to parse together what Lilah missed from context, it reminded me of when *I* was first learning ASL. I loved the differentiation of ASL text and English text, and I found myself visualizing how I thought the conversation was signed based on the different identities and language use of the characters! Sometimes I even signed back at them.

I was shocked to see the sudden police brutality scene in the book, and it seemed like most of the book was happy and uplifting about Deafness and then suddenly there was violence against Deaf people. It was saddening just because I understand the grave reality of it. Overall I am happy that was put in the book, as I think it’s a good way to introduce hearing people to some heavy issues in the Deaf community.

I love the way that the characters interacted with Mackenzie. It’s a humbling reminder as a hearing person to remain true and respectful to the Deaf community, and to remember our place in the community.

I really loved reading a book that includes ASL, Deaf culture and camp community. I recently interpreted a Deaf summer camp and I loved feeling like I was back in that space again!
