I, Zombie by Hugh Howey
4.0

The premise of the story is completely original: what if trapped inside the zombies, there are still human minds totally aware of the terrible things their bodies are doing, and completely helpless to stop them, to stop themselves. It is heartbreaking.

Not your usually zombie book. At all.

Trigger warning: there's a lot of gore involved, but I think that as the zombies are aware of it and are experiencing and sharing it with you, the reader, it turns up being much less gratuitous than you might think, certainly much less gratuitous than in most zombie stories.
