Something That May Shock and Discredit You
by Daniel M. Lavery
funny
reflective
fast-paced
A delightfully self-deprecating, earnest, and introspective collection all at once. This collection of essays and musings is full of a wide array of pop culture and literary references; your enjoyment of it will likely depend, in part, on your familiarity with the various references employed. I deeply appreciated the retellings (and "queering," to use a word that feels a bit too serious in this context) of biblical stories and some of the callbacks to Dante, Evelyn Waugh, and House Hunters, but some of the others went a little above my head. I don't think I know enough about Greek and medieval mythology to fully appreciate a few of the essays here.
Overall, it's a somewhat esoteric yet delightful collection, all bound together by a signature sense of self-reflection and witty humor. The title could have just as easily been Transmasculine Resonance, because it contains that in multitudes.
Favorite essays: "Unwanted Coming-Out Disorder", "The Stages of Not Going on T", "Evelyn Waugh and the Opposite of Communion", "And His Name Shall Be Called Something Hard to Remember", "Paul and Second Timothy: The Transmasculine Epistles"
