The Year of Magical Thinking
by Joan Didion
emotional
reflective
sad
medium-paced
I think this books has some really poignant things to say about grief and loss, and I appreciated that aspect of it immensely. However, there is (understandably) a lot of time spent reminiscing about Didion's life, and holy fuck are theses people painfully privileged. It made it kind of difficult to empathize at times, especially when highly privileged things were presented as normal. Like, I don't feel bad that traveling to Milan is ruined for you Joan. People are starving Joan. They can't afford health care Joan.
