The Secret History by Donna Tartt
medium-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
- Strong character development? No
- Loveable characters? No
- Diverse cast of characters? No
3.0
If you took Crime and Punishment and sucked out the class consciousness, existentialism, self deprecation, then turned the cast into a set of homogenous New England private school kids, you would get this book.
I think it’s a real shame because the writing itself is pretty good, but the characters are just hard to get over. They seem to lack the kind if reflection and depth that can make flawed characters meaningful.
Really disappointing; I thought I was in for a provocative and challenging piece but instead got a bunch of “I’m not like other guys :(“ whining from the MC.
