Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills
4.0

This book I devoured within a day, and it was so good, but something was off. Now I’ll explain it the best I can, without spoilers.

The plot - it’s quite a dark book with the triggers so CHECK YA FUCKIN TRIGGERS PEOPLE! It’s an enemies to lovers, a dash of forbidden romance and forced proximity, sports romance, it’s set in a high school so you can guess what the vibe is. It’s a HEA, and I did love the book as a whole. Now, that being said, I’m not sure if its the triggering topics that are covered that are now triggering me, if the topics were covered in the wrong way, or if I just wasn’t in the right headspace, but it all bugged me. The whole way through. I found myself getting annoyed at every little thing, and it made reading quite difficult at points (I’m no closer to narrowing down the cause, I apologise!) Other than that, its a great book!

The MC - I’m not entirely sure where the FMC was going with this vibe. Ava is a decent portrayal of a woman who has gone through what she has, however some of her morals/things that she did throughout bugged the shit out of me. Maybe I’m used to more morally black characters, but it was a real sticking point for me. I’m glad she got her HEA though.

The male counterpart - Knox had the same vibe as most contemporary romance male leads do; means well, but naive to a point. I loved him, I wanted the best for him, and I can see his intentions, but poor baby doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing.
