Black Clover, Vol. 3 by Yûki Tabata

5.0

Okay, this is going to be random, but there's one specific part of this volume that caught my eye.

During the fight between the Black Bulls, Golden Dawn, and Mars, Mimosa mentions that the royals scoff at working hard. She says that they think it's beneath them and only peasants do that. And I don't know what it is, but out of everything this volume threw at me, that's the thing that stuck out. I think the reason is because this puts the royals on a whole different level of douchebaggery, but also because it's such stupid elitist bullshit that my mind went into overdrive trying to make sense of it. Not that I dislike this thinking, mind you, but just how fucking dumb it and yet makes perfect sense with their characters.

Speaking of the royals, as of right now most of them are pretty much the same characters with slightly different speech patterns and wholly different magic. While I don't have anything against Tabata's method of using Shounen Jump cliches at every corner, the royals are easily the most disappointing group of cliches so far. As far as I can tell, the only purpose they serve is to be an obstacle for our heroes to overcome and prove them wrong. Quite frankly, I'm kind of okay with this because at least the Wizard King, Klaus, and Mimosa are nice and balance out the assholes, but still they're easily the worst part of this series so far.

Speaking of the Wizard King, I fucking love him. I love how personable he is while still maintaining this air of importance and aloofness. His interactions with Asta and Yuno are fucking adorable, I want to see more of him, please!

On a completely unrelated note, I feel like Asta's and Yuno's rivalry is similar to Hinata's and Kageyama's from Haikyu and I am so there for it! I love me a healthy yet competitive rivalry!

Finally, I'm having a blast seeing all of the creative ways magic can be used. I'm also absolutely appalled at how horribly magic can be used to harm others. The discussion on class and magic usage is also pretty neat, I'm assuming this new villain will be opening up a discussion on how classism can severely derail a person mentally. I kinda hope he offs some of those royals. Wouldn't be too sad if he did.

That's all I've got for now. This was a great volume, I'm having a blast reading this series!
