blrobin2 's review for:
The Essex Serpent
by Sarah Perry
From the outset you may expect this book to be darker or more pulpy. While there are spaces of dark humor and Gothic dread, the overall narrative leans closer to Bronte than to Poe. It is a book of letters. It is about what happens when we learn to see ourselves through our time with others, and through that lens forced to change
Because of the Victorian time period, there is a fog of pleasantries that can make characters feel more distant Also, the story seems to come to a standstill as it threads every needle of its characters’ whereabouts. I would encourage you to push through these moments, as it all has thematic purpose, even if it doesn’t quite come together the way you might expect
Overall, not what I expected, but was charmed by it by the end
