Lovely little book that led me down a rabbit hole on Hankyu Railways. I loved how mundane every character and their situation was. Something like this could never happen in car-dependent North American suburbs…
However, I could see some internalized misogyny seeping out at certain points - most notably towards the end: “As young as they were, these girls were already like women. Spiteful, indecisive and prideful.” You could imagine my surprise when I learned that the novelist is also a woman. How sad.
An adult/minor relationship is also depicted in a somewhat positive fashion. Odd.
