Almost Mortal by Christopher Leibig

4.0

3.5/5

Almost Mortal does A LOT of things. There’s a criminal defense attorney, a serial killer, the supernatural, and historical aspects thrown in for good measure. Sam Young, our attorney, has a gift for knowing when people are guilty. When a young nun approaches him to help discover the identity of a serial killer, and prevent the pastor from being exposed for not reporting the man after confession, Sam feels a connection. But nothing is as it seems.

I really enjoyed the legal portions of Almost Mortal. Sam’s interactions with his clients and how his mind worked to helped his clients was the best part for me. On the other hand, this led to a lot of characters being introduced. It became hard to keep track of as the story went on. There is also technical talk about DNA that has my eyes glazing over a bit. So you’ll have to pay attention, but it’s worth it!

I love a book that includes old journal entries, and Almost Mortal’s are fascinating. These entries provide some historical content and background you will need to solve the case! It did feel far fetched at times, but you need that in a supernatural book.

The ending of this one basically guarantees you need to read the second one. It is wild, and really where the supernatural aspect will take off. I’m interested to see how some side characters will play into Almost Damned because there are holes left in Almost Mortal.

If you’re looking for a completely different legal thriller, check out Almost Mortal. It still reminds me of the show Evil, but flipped on its head. I can’t wait to start Almost Damned! Thank you to Sabrina Dax PR and Christopher Leibig for my review copies!
