I really enjoyed this book. I never realized how much I took for granted being able to be a queer trans man until reading this. Lou was a freaky but very interesting man.
I loved the book itself but I didn’t love the editing. The exact entry dates were taken out for “ease of reading” but I found it to just be confusing at times. The book is broken into sections by where he was living. Each section corresponds to a certain apartment and has the time period on that page. While I understand the decision to not include every single date, some of the time chunks were rather large and/or the content within that time frame was a bit more time sensitive. For example, the first section of the book Lou was aged 10-18. The content with that chunk about his budding sexuality definitely would’ve been in a different light depending on his exact age.
I also noticed some inconsistencies with who the editors decided to note in the glossary. Some people were referenced once or twice in passing and were noted in the glossary yet others could be mentioned time and time again with no note in the glossary. This left me a bit confused on who certain people were.
The book itself was fantastic. Lou was a very strange man and I mean this with all the love in my heart. The things he did in his lifetime were wonderful. It was lovely seeing him reflect back on his life with pride in the end. Seeing him find himself and be able to be the person he wished he had when he was younger was amazing. He was open and unapologetic. I admire him for being the headstrong man he was.
