The Sign of Four
by Arthur Conan Doyle
This second Holmes story is a big improvement over the first, in my opinion. There's a love interest for Watson, a part where it seems like Holmes has failed, and a conspiracy that goes back to the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (though there are some extremely cringe-y racist parts concerning Indians). And we find out Holmes fights boredom with cocaine!
I was surprised how much AC Doyle used super long confessions to convey the story. The same was true of A Study in Scarlet. It's sort of tiresome. But on the plus side, I'm growing to love how Holmes inspects the ground and narrates what happened based on footprints and other markings. It reminds me of Prince Humperdink in The Princess Bride. "There was a mighty duel! The loser ran off alone, and the winner followed those footprints toward Guilder..."
