While I continue to love the way that Kennedy Ryan writes a romance story, there was a lot of elements to the characters that left much to be desired.

Starting from the less egregious, Bristol continually would stress about how she was “not like other girls” in the ways she would should up for the people she loved. And while I understand the sentiment behind her impassioned statements, the misogyny dripping from the times she says this (twice at LEAST), is formidable.

The more pressing issue though, is Grip’s on and off tirade about cops. The absolutely piss-poor arguments about “not all cops” are bad and about how reform starts at an image shift of “no longer looking at the issue like there are two sides” was rancid and vile. It ignores the years upon years of anti Black sentiment that is permanently ingrained into the carceral state and frankly has aged quite badly.

I plan on reading the sequel because I’m invested in the romance itself between Grip and Bristol but their personalities at times left much to be desired.
