i'm sensing a common theme with my feelings on schwab's books: absolutely amazing plot and character arcs but,,,,,unsatisfying endings. probably just a me thing tbh but alas :’)
the build-up in this story, in particular, was so intense and fascinating and i ate up every single page. reading from victor and eli's perspective wasn't enough, because when i got to see through sydney, mitch, and serena's as well, it made me even more interested to see how interwoven all these characters' threads tie with each other. victor talks about fate, eli talks about God--seeing how both pan out in the actions they take during this story and the characters they align themselves with (willing and unwilling) was incredibly genius and made their final scene together something to be savored (even though in the aftermath, it didn't feel complete in my opinion).
i'm a big fan of exploring morally grey characters, but seeing the "found family" (?) bit that may not even be found family fit so neatly into such an imaginative sci-fi fantasy added so much more depth to the characters, i believe. one of said characters says to another that there are no good people in this story, and i absolutely loved that because even so, you saw these people fall to their weaknesses but then also play on their own strengths. you see them take a life while they themself already feel like they lost their own. i'm such a nerd with making connections like that, so victor and eli talking about the theory behind ExtraOrdinaries and then seeing them bring that theory to life in more ways than one--to the point where they'd burn themselves down if it meant the other would fall--only made me burst even more in wonder and awe.
this entire book did, so that's cool.
content warnings:// consumption of alchohol, misuse of drugs (intentional), animal death, (a lot of) blood, bits of gore, murder, fire, absent parents, torture, and graphic depictions of violence
