Jubilee by Margaret Walker

3.0

This is the story of Vyry, a woman born to a Black, slave mother and the white "marster". The story follows her from slavery, through the Civil War, and into her freedom. The plot is sprawling and the characters are powerful. Vyry herself is an incredibly resilient woman who continually chooses love over hate, despite all the trials she faces throughout her life. Vyry humanizes a major period of American history. The fact that this was based on Walker's great-grandmother (and great-grandfather) adds an important layer to the story. Grateful that this was sent to me in my Page 1 subscription!
