Grant by Ron Chernow
5.0
It should come as no surprise that Ron Chernow’s biography of Ulysses S. Grant is just as entertaining, educational, and riveting as his other works. Chernow does an outstanding job of making real every significant person in Grant’s story: Grant himself, his parents, his family, his fellow soldiers, and his political rivals are all rendered in superb detail, and Chernow’s writing breathes life into every single one of them. Furthermore, Chernow’s intimate exploration of the Civil War’s Western Theater, as well as the triumphs, trials, and tribulations of Reconstruction, all give a new understanding of this era of American history.
Lastly, Mark Bramhall’s narration is absolutely fabulous. This book clocks in at 48 hours of listening time, but it’s an incredibly easy listen thanks to Bramhall’s outstanding narration. He does a great job of giving each character a distinctive voice, and it’s an absolute joy to behold. Given how hefty the actual book is, I can’t think of a book better suited to listening.
Just like Hamilton, this is an absolute must-read for not only history buffs, but anyone with an interest in Ulysses S. Grant, the Civil War, or Reconstruction. Hugely recommended.
