Dead Poets Society by N.H. Kleinbaum
3.0

One of my favourite movies ever, but the book is such a letdown. It just copies the original screenplay without any of the spark the film has. Todd’s birthday scene sums it up, in the film, Ethan Hawke and RSL improvised throwing the desk set off the roof because the original line (‘428 dollars…’) felt cheesy. That line’s still in the book, and it shows how flat the whole thing feels in comparison with the same story told far better on the screen. Don’t get me started on Knox’s party scene.

If you’re a big fan, it’s still worth a read, maybe just for the odd extra line a character you love says. But honestly for a film that blew me away when I found out it wasn’t based on a book, this has to be one of the rare times where the book version of a film is actually the worst adaptation. I’m also convinced a lot of the good reviews are just riding on people’s love for the movie, not the book itself. Not terrible, but just honestly unnecessary.
