Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

5.0

"Shame isn't it? That we only like our heroes out in the streets when they are looking their best and their uniforms are 'spit and polished,' and not showing us the wounds they suffered on our behalf."

Where to begin? Well, 1. I have never thoroughly enjoyed a historical fiction book... until Maisie Dobbs. 2. I have never cried while reading a book.... until Maisie Dobbs. 3. I have never loved a more bad ass, beautiful, and brilliant female character.... until Maisie Dobbs. (GO TO THE END TO GET MY RECOMENDATION ON HOW TO READ THE SERIES)

This is the introduction to Ms. Maisie Dobbs. A phycologist and investigator who has just inherited the small business from her mentor, Maurice Blanche. When her 1st customer requests her to look into his wife's strange behavior... Maisie uncovers a strange business called "The Retreat". Throughout her journey to uncover the Retreat's secrets, you are shown the torture and sadness of soldiers who are still struggling with the aftermath of the Great War. Along with the extent of what some unfortunate soldier's did to find some solace.

Along side this story line, you learn about who Maisie Dobbs actually is! Her childhood, education, relationships, and thoughts of the war. Most interestingly, you learn about her experience as a front line nurse during the war. This was such a sad experience to read about, however, it was really interesting to hear about WW1 from her perspective.

Lastly, I think this book would be a lot more interesting if you were to read a newer Maisie Dobbs book in the series (I recommend "Journey To Munich"). It may be a little difficult to follow along with the characters, but it will make this book more exciting to read! I enjoyed this so much because I was so interested in learning how Maisie became who she was during those later books. If this is the first book you read in the series you may be a little bored at times!
