Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke
5.0
Attica Locke is a superb writer, and Bluebird, Bluebird is a fantastic mystery novel. One of my favorite elements of Locke’s writing is her ability to evoke a sense of place in her novels. I’ve never been to Houston, but thanks to Black Water Rising and Bluebird, Bluebird I feel like I’ve visited the city and East Texas. You can imagine everything about the little bayou-backed towns (and trace them on a map) that Texas Ranger Darren Mathews visits along US Route 59.
Locke’s writing is gripping, her details and sense of place are evocative, her plotting and pacing are excellent, and her characters feel so terrifically real, it hurts. Her writing is consistently excellent, and the mystery she crafts here is no exception. Highly recommended for any mystery fans out there!
Shelftalker Blurb: Attica Locke is a master of contemporary mystery, and Bluebird, Bluebird, the first novel in her east-Texas-set Highway 59 series, is a brilliant, gripping novel. Darren Mathews, a Black Texas Ranger, returns to his small east Texas hometown to solve a pair of murders—one victim a Black lawyer from Chicago, and the other a local white woman—before the town’s long-simmering racial tensions boil over. I couldn’t put it down!
