The Last Emperox by John Scalzi

adventurous lighthearted fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Plot
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated

2.0

This book ruined the series for me. The shortcomings of the series were laid a little too bare at the end and everything wrapped up far too nicely.

  • All the character development feels unearned.
  • Everyone seemingly knows “everything”
  • Somehow every character in a highly political society thinks the best thing to do is speak bluntly always.

This book could be summarized by everyone knows everything, except they miscalculate one small thing, and that’s the twist. Repeat.

The other repeated twist is that no character ever truly dies.

Oh, and the gaul it takes to end a book series with a literal deus ex machina.
