Tim by Colleen McCullough

4.0

"Sometimes all the miles between are as nothing, she thought, sometimes they are narrowed to the little silence between the beats of a heart." ♡I haven't read any Colleen McCullough before, and I really enjoyed her writing. The characterisation of Mary and Tim was so well done. I loved Ron as well, and supporting characters like Dawnie, and Tim and Mary's bosses, and loved the way relationships developed and evolved and broke down. I absolutely love Tim, he's such a sweet, innocent, pure character, and the way Mary treats him and respects him makes me love her as well. I think the way their relationship grows worked really well, and I didn't find the age or intellect gap strange when they they married because they worked so well together as people. I've heard this book described as a love story with a difference and it really is- each character is exolored as a person first, rather than as a love interest, and I think that makes them so much more complex and endearing. The ending was a bit drawn out and didn't work as well for me as the lead up to the marriage, and the scene near the end when Tim is injured seemed pretty random and unnecessary, but overall I really liked the story. Will definitely be reading more of Mccullough's writing to see how it developed since this early novel.
